Bad Science on Food Packages

From Boing Boing comes two links to some funny and yet scary examples of just plain wrong science being handed out to kids.

Happymealscience The first is from a Happy Meal. The tagline says "You can jump six times higher in space!" Really? Well first, if they meant space, then you'll need something to jump from and then if you jump real hard, you'll just keep going. Maybe they meant the moon...?

The second one is from Pomodoro Pasta. This one has a couple of doozies. How about the little know fact that "Mars is the closest planet to the sun, but its not the hottest, Venus is!" Someon tell the Martians that they've skipped ahead a couple places and someone tell Mercury to get out of the way. A couple of more subtle items; one item states that "Did you know that 71% of the Earth is water, not land?" A flickr viewer points out that actually that would be the surface of the Earth, not the Earth itself. Another astute viewer point to the sentence that says "More than 1000 Earth's could fit inside Jupiter" and asks More than 1000 whats? So remember, now its just not trans fat you have to worry about, but yor kid could also get a big dose of bad science if you're not careful!Pastascience

OK..my kid just cracked me up...

I'm sitting at my laptop listening to a Webcast on SOA v AJAX and my son is sitting next to me trying to get into Disney's Toontown. As he is watching the game load-up and do so kind of slowly, he turns to me and pointing at the screen he says what I interpret as "dila". I ask him to repeat this several times until finally he points again and says "diala...it slows everything down." Then it hits me - my son is saying "dial-up"  - we have these Time Warner commercials here talking about how great broadband access is and how slow dial-up is and I guess the marketing is getting through. Stunning though in that dial-up is something that he will never have any personal experience with.

Chuck Norris Facts (almost fell out of my chair laughing)

Chuck_norris_facts This just cracked me up! A sample:

  • Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits.
  • The chief export of Chuck Norris is pain.
  • There is no chin behind Chuck Norris' beard. There is only another fist.
  • Chuck Norris is ten feet tall, weighs two-tons, breathes fire, and could eat a hammer and take a shotgun blast standing.
  • The Great Wall of China was originally created to keep Chuck Norris out. It failed miserably.

Quoth he...

  • "The hallmark of revolution is that the goals of the revolutionaries cannot be contained by the institutional structure of the society they live in. As a result, either the revolutionaries are put down, or some of those institutions are transmogrified, replaced, or simply destroyed. We are plainly witnessing a restructuring of the music and newspaper businesses, but their suffering isn’t unique, it’s prophetic." --Clay Shirky
