Chances are you have either AIM (the IM app from AOL) or MSN Messenger on your computer. Have you added any of the chat bots to your buddy lists? On my AIM list (AIM bots), I have the bot from MovieFone that let's me IM with it to find movie times in my area. I also have SmarterChild (which also evidently powers MSN's Encarta Chat bot) - this one I can IM with and get all sort of general information like weather, traffic, etc. I also have one called MAKEBot from the folks over at MAKE Magazine. This one allows me to automatically get IMs that send me the latest headlines from MAKE - I can set the frequency and even use the IM to do keyword searches on the magazine's Web site.
Now over on MSN (story about MSN bots)I have one bot that allows me to access the data from the Encarta Encyclopedia via an IM. Just type in a word or phrase and the bot will start bringing you facts, figures - and if you are accessing it using the actual MSN Messenger client (and not a Web-based app like Meebo or an IM aggregator like Trillian) then you can click on links in your IM chat and a really cool display of data from Encarta. I also have this interesting one from a site called FeedXS that allows you to build your own RSS feeds. Well their chat bot allows me to post items to this feed using the bot. So I just open an IM chat, type in whatever I want, hit send and that gets pushed out along my already established feed to whoever is subscribing. So where does that get us? These are all commercial apps and can't be altered right? Yes and no.
